I was having lunch yesterday with a friend and was asked. What makes me happy working in one single company? Wow. That's a fully loaded question on a friday afternoon.
The reason she asked was because she is starting to feel kind of 'lethargic' where she is even though she has just been given a new portfolio. She is wondering if its the job, the people or the company.
After an hour of discussion with a couple of other topics in between and chomping down my sandwich at the same time, we agree that she should wait it out until at least the end of the year to take stock of the situation again.
I have always believe that we must love the job that we do and the people that we work with. If one of the two is not in place then we will have a stressfull time in the office. Eventually it will affect the quality of our work and our life. Even our health can be affected too as a result of prolong stress.
If that ever happens we need to make a change. It doesn't have to be a major change. Maybe just a change of port folio or department. A change every 3 years is highly recommended as this would expand our knowledge and experience. Meeting new people along the way is an added bonus.
This has always been my advice to my nieces and nephews as well as the new recruits in the office.
A happy working life would certainly contribute to a happier life. Of course that's only one half of it. There is also the "after office" life that needs to be managed too. But that's another story.
So my friend, just go with the flow and take time to smell the roses. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel just yet! Meantime, let's have more lunches!
